In 2008 Neil abandoned his “tree hugger” credentials and became the leading Democrat advocate for offshore drilling for oil and natural gas. According to the Honolulu Star Bulletin:
“A version of a bill originated by Rep. Neil Abercrombie to expand offshore oil drilling is headed for the House floor”
“Approval of the bill would be an important achievement for Abercrombie, who is known as more combative than cooperative.”
Abercrombie points out that a 1953 law forbids oil and gas extracted from the shelf to be sold in the international market. “What’s produced in America stays in America,” he says.
We can only assume that by “staying in America,” Neil didn’t mean a giant, wad of flaming tar the size of Rhode Island washing up along the southern seacoast. Funny how things don’t always go as planned.
So, there is no doubt about the offshore oil drilling enthusiasm displayed by, then Congressman, Neil Abercrombie take a look at his video testimony, where he squeals, “We better get started!”: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pj8stCRXcFc
